Feeling overwhelmed, confused, and/or frustrated by the multitude of competing messages about how to best care for your skin every day? Makeup My Way’s Skincare Guru, Jenna, is here to help! Here is her routine that goes beyond splashing water on your face. Avoid premature aging, clogged pores, irritation etc. and let’s make your skin the best it can be.
Jenna has a five step simple skincare routine to implement every morning and evening regimen.
First start with a facial cleanser followed by a moisturizer and sunscreen. For those of us who are over age 40 you may want to add exfoliation, hydration and maybe even a special treatment.
As you start exploring skincare products, remember that quality counts. Especially in a minimalist skincare regimen, the ingredients are essential for your success in getting the results you want.
Step 1: Cleanse
During the day, your skin goes through a lot. Dead skin cells form on the surface. Dirt, oils, and impurities collect there, too. This is why Skin Health Experts recommend beginning and ending each day by washing your face with the right cleanser for your skin type or concern. By effectively and consistently cleansing your skin, you improve your ability to avoid clogged pores, breakouts, and premature aging. By making cleansing a part of your AM and PM skincare routine, you can help rid your skin of these irritants, and in return, keep it healthy-looking and glowing. Beginning your daily skincare routine with a clean base will allow the rest of your skincare products to soak in better and cause them to be more effective.
When choosing a facial cleanser, select one that works with all skin types, like Foaming Facial Cleanser by BNY Cosmetics. It is a gentle foaming cleanser that penetrates deep into the skin's surface effectively removing makeup residue and excess dirt and oil while leaving skin clean and refreshed. It is anti-inflammatory, increases cell turnover, fights blemishes and bacteria. Your skin will feel soft and clean.
Step 2: Exfoliate
While exfoliation is not a required step in a basic skincare routine, I think once you understand the benefits, you will consider adding it to your regimen. Kate Somerville’s Intensive Pore Exfoliating treatment is a dual-action exfoliator that smooths and polishes skin to reveal a natural glow. Kate’s signature facial delivers four treatments: cleanser, scrub, peel, and mask in one powerhouse product.
Step 3: Hydrate and Moisturize
Want to see fine lines disappear in an instant? Don’t reach for a thick, heavy cream. Opt for a face moisturizer such as Laroche-Posay Prebiotic Skincare. This is a double repair face moisturizer that is oil free. This face moisturizer provides up to 48-hour hydration & helps restore skin's barrier after 1 hour. It won't clog pores and has been tested on sensitive skin. Seek a moisturizer that can turn back time. There are plenty to choose from but favorites are BNY Idebenone Anti-Aging Cream and Olay Regenerist Sculpting Cream.
Step 4: Serums
A face serum is a product typified by its rapid absorption and ability to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, together with its non-greasy finish and intensive formula with a very high concentration of active substances. Find the product that will help with your problem area whether it be rejuvenation, resurfacing, hyaluronic acid firming serum, deep wrinkles collagen peptides, retinol or vitamin C to brighten complexion. Search through our serums and treatments, and choose the one that best resonates with your skin type.
Step 5: Protect
Now that you've loaded your skin up with antioxidants and moisture, it's time to protect it from the day ahead. When simplifying your skincare routine, don't ditch the sunscreen. Why? Sunscreen is a way to protect your skin cells and acts as armor against the outside world - especially harmful UV rays. The only way to prevent skin damage is to stay out of the afternoon sun, wear protective clothing and always use sunscreen.

When choosing which sunscreen to incorporate into your basic skincare routine, I recommend applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. An SPF of 30 or higher will help protect your skin from premature aging and harmful irritants. Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen’s mineral-based Face sunscreen is designed for daily wear. The lightweight water gel formula works double duty to protect you from 97% of UV rays while hydrating skin with Hyaluronic Acid and nourishing skin with antioxidants. Their Face sunscreen won’t clog pores, and it contains no parabens or fragrances, making it ideal for sensitive skin. It is available at MakeupMyWay.com
FYI: I cannot stress enough the need for sun protection. Most major brands offer full-spectrum products meant to block both types of UV rays, a constant danger to skin. Do you know that tanning salons and tanning beds do just as much damage to your skin? Actually, a tan is the sign of your melanin’s response to damage and a clear symptom that you received too much UV exposure. Remember, an attractive salon tan is simply not worth the potential price you will pay.
